The fifth edition of Bournea Reaching Out continues the proud tradition of documenting the people, places, and heritage of Clonakenny, Couraguneen, and the wider Bournea parish.
This 2018 volume offers a vibrant mix of local history, genealogy, folklore, school projects, and parish life, beautifully illustrated with rare photographs and community contributions. Highlights include The Benn & Donovan History (tracing Barack Obama’s Irish roots), Camblin Church & Ballycrine Families, Fairies, Little People and Sióg, Derrylahan House & Lands, and New Self-Guided Heritage Walks in Bournea.
The booklet also features contributions from Scoil Mhuire Lismackin students, capturing stories from their families and local landmarks - alongside historical pieces on Clonakenny GAA, farming life in the 1920s, and fascinating biographies such as The Life and Times of Marty Maher and Daisy Bates – “Kabbarli” of the Aborigines.
Compiled by the Bournea Reaching Out heritage group with support from Ireland Reaching Out, this publication celebrates local identity while connecting the parish with its global diaspora.
A must-have for anyone with roots in Bournea or an appreciation for Irish local history and folklore.
